At Levenfeld Pearlstein, a small Chicago law firm, birthday candles can signal a change in leadership.

Last week the firm named David Solomon, 47, to head the corporate and securities practice, taking over from Mary Wasik, who at 60 had hit the firm’s age ceiling for holding a top management spot. At the same time, Laura Friedel, 43, stepped in to run Levenfeld’s labor and employment practice.
